MUNF 2018 Review by Miray AYYILDIZ
Ladies and gentlemen, buckle up your seatbelts, cause you’re about to be taken to a journey like no other. There will be tears, deaths, weddings; so you better get prepared for anything. If you’re ready, here we go!
Our story leads back to the very beginning when MUNF 2017 was finally concluded and the executive team was already on board for coming up with new and fresher ideas for the next year. They were looking for something strong, something clever, something worthy of discussing and spending days and nights thinking about it, and eventually, three General Assembly committees, one ECOSOC committee, one special committee and one crisis committee were designated and planned to come to life, with a list of hand-picked topics ready to be served to all the participants. The excitement was real. They ain’t playin’ games guys, they were determined to host a conference better than the previous ones, and luckily, everything went as great and unforgettable as planned. Now, let me paint a bigger picture for you to see everything that went down.
The calendar shows the twenty-first of April and everyone is getting ready to look as put together and elegant as possible, ‘cause it is time for the opening ceremony. To be honest, I don’t generally enjoy ceremonies where people keep talking about the same things over and over again while not saying something we don’t already know, but this ceremony, with the help of amazing keynote speakers, was one of those that leave a mark after it ends.
The session hours on the first day mostly consisted of lobbying time, and as the presidential chair of the ECOSOC committee, I can proudly say that even though there were many first-timers in the room, they were all working with equal determination and confidence. I felt like a proud mom. At the end of the day, we were taken to the Anemon Hotel for the Gala Dinner. It was as elegant and fun as it sounds, the best way to put an end to the first day.
Let me give you a little information about the committees. The Joint Crisis Committee was related to the Russian Revolution, which focused on the conflict between the Bolshevik Party and the provisional government. The committee has witnessed a wedding, a funeral, a resurrection and countless trials. It was the real deal. In addition, the committee of Historical NATO was discussing the bombing of Yugoslavia. The delegates were killing it in this committee, the flow of the topic was really fast. General Assembly committees were hosting many first-timers this year, so it was kind of an introduction of MUN for them, but nevertheless, the performance was so much stronger than expected. A round of applause for all the first-timers out there!
At the end of the second day, another party was ahead of us. Chickenesh Cool, which is one of the trendiest places in Samsun was hosting the social event and frankly, it was the best decision. After a delicious dinner, the dance floor was overflowing, and then it was decided that the party should be moved to the beach. Many hours of dancing and singing were spent and the night ended with a show of fireworks. A dream MUN party!
The last day was the most productive one so far, but we didn’t forget to play games and bring the conference to an end in a fun way either. After many session hours and phone number exchanges, it was time for the closing ceremony. The Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly did a great job hosting the ceremony, and many tears of happiness were shed. You would have cried if you were there as well! It was the most suitable closure for a significant conference, and I’m sure that everyone who walked out that door was carrying a mark from it.
To sum up, it was an experience that I can strongly recommend for everyone to have, without any hesitation. Hope to see you all next year!
