How to work in Crisis Team in a MUN Conference?
As many of you are interested in, Crisis Committees are of the most intriguing and essential part of the Model United Nations Conferences. The most heated and passionate speeches entertained in these committees. There are 2 main impacts, one, the agenda items are generally so attractive and stuff to descant on, and two, a crisis that is heating the debate even more. For those who don’t know about Crisis Committees, I can explain in a nutshell. Basically, it is the simulation of a past event or will possibly happen events. Delegates are deciding their own way/plan to shape the past/future. The most amusing part is crises that are given by the crisis team. And I will explain the process of crisis team and express my personal experiments since I’ve been in crisis team and crisis director for once.
First of all, a good crisis team is comprised of a well experienced, knowledgeable and creative people to work in harmony. Because what I believe is, collaborative work and brainstorm are so important while creating the most conflict-creator and enthusing crises. In order to do that, I will explain step by step how to be a successful crisis team member.
1) Reading the study guides deeply
The study guides are the loadstar for the committee. Crisis Members have to have a better understanding of the agenda item. Because creating unique crises are not that easy. Therefore to have an idea what to create and how to create, reading study guides will be the most important and significant step to take off. As a personal suggestion, do not try to read study guides during the conference. Reading 1, 2 weeks before will be the most appropriate.
2) Researching more about the topic
Browsing on the internet related to the committee topic maybe add more to your knowledge and more easier write creative crises. It develops the understanding and to see the conflicting ideas/ideologies. We can take the example of United Nations House of Representatives Committee. In this committee, there are two main contrary sides. Therefore to understand both in order to give crises about them, Crisis Team Members needs to understand, interpret both sides.
3) Collaborative work during the conference
As I have mentioned above, working collaboratively with the Crisis Team as a Crisis Member is a crucial issue. Because there may have things that you have missed and someone else can fix or add more. That’s what we call “Brainstorm”. Discussing and talking with the other members will be helpful and beneficial.
4) Formatting and Arrangement
One last step to the forming our masterpiece is making the last touches. At this step, we have to think creatively to make the crisis alive! For example, if your crisis about revealing some sort of secret information or a press release, you can create a famous news source/outlet template to put your crisis. If it is a betrayal, you can even be a bot delegate of a related country and plan a kidnap from the committee! The last example was a real example that I had from ETUMUN2018. I was a Head of Crisis and represented a country my colleges instantly entered the room and kidnapped me!
At this step, it is all up to you and your creativity.
